BUTEYKO

Buteyko (bew-tay-ko) is a unique asthma education and simple breathing exercises program that enables to gain control and to reduce medication. It is named after Ukrainian medical doctor and research scientist, Professor Konstantin Buteyko. It was developed as a treatment for reversing Chronic Hyperventilation Disorders (CHVS). Professor Buteyko's major contribution has been to recognize that there are many organic diseases like asthma that are caused by breathing too much. Since 1985 Buteyko therapy has been the standard treatment for asthma and many of the other hyperventilation related disorders in Russia. In his paper entitled The Biochemical Basis of K.P.Buteyko's Theory of the Diseases of Deep Respiration, Kazarinov explains the biochemistry behind chronic hyperventilation disorders. The work is summarised in an easy-to-understand four-page document entitled The Theoretical Understanding Behind the Buteyko Technique. Studies show that a person who uses Buteyko can reduce symptoms and reliever medication by over 90% within six weeks. Clinical trials show Asthmatics enjoyed an improved quality of life with reduced Asthma symptoms, as well as a 96% reduction in reliever use and a 49% reduction in preventer medication three months after adopting the Buteyko method. Buteyko does not suggest asthmatics discard their prescribed medication. Course attendees are instructed to use their reliever medication on an "as needed" basis, and to reduce preventer medication only under doctor's supervision.
